For Youth

Whether or not you consider yourself an artist, if you have a creative mind, wild imagination or ever felt just different, Creative Fields is a place for you to bloom.

What is Creative Fields?

Creative Fields is a yearlong paid arts apprenticeship program designed for teens and young adults aged 14-19. Youth who participate get 100 hours of experience in a huge range of creative careers!

Take a look to see if you (or someone you know!) might want to join the 2026-27 school year.

Every brain learns differently and needs distinct conditions to flourish. Creative spaces are a great place to experiment with new materials and methods, and they give us a lot of freedom to work in ways that are best for our own specific needs. We are deeply committed to making sure all of our learning spaces are kind, safe and inclusive.

Creative Fields has been designed for youth with neurodiverse mental health or learning needs, or trauma and stressor-related disorders: ADHD,  Complex PTSD or PTSD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Depression or Anxiety are all diagnoses and needs that we created our program to support.

If you’ve ever sat in a traditional classroom and struggled to stay focused, or found your feelings sometimes get in the way of your goals, making art can be a place where you find your groove.

We do accept "neurotypical” teens and young adults, but as most learning spaces are designed with neurotypical brains and bodies in mind, we will consider these youth after ensuring we’ve made space for neurodiverse youth first.

Phase One | Workshops

September 28 to April 28

Youth S. Peña screenprinting at Teaching Artist Walker Mettling’s studio

Youth begin our program by visiting Open Studios with mentor teacher, Kimberly Zzyzx. Youth participants will each get to choose 1-2 studios to visit. Then in late October we’ll begin weekly hands-on workshops at different artist’s studios all around the high desert. There are five (5) Teaching Artists and we will spend 4 Wednesdays in a row with each one.

During Phase 1 we’re learning about how artists make their living, what jobs they perform, and experiment with their artistic medium or practice ourselves. For example, in past workshops, youth have created sculptures out of found objects, learned how to silkscreen, and created to-scale models of theater sets.

Youth participants will get PAID for this portion of Creative Fields, $100 per workshop series. Think of it as an informal internship. Because youth are receiving training professional creative environment, they receive a stipend, and support in compiling all of their experience into a professional resumé.

Phase 2 | Studio Collaboration

May 5 to Jun 11

During Phase 2, youth participants create their own group or individual projects for an art exhibition in June. These collaborative studio sessions are held in our classroom in Twentynine Palms with the support of Teaching Artists.

We strongly encourage youth to expand their comfort level with the size, scale and methods they use in their project to make the most of the mentorship experience.

Join us in June to celebrate youth participants year of creative experience and artmaking!
